When you're considering tapping a large diameter water main, it can be difficult to figure out how to go about the process. Though small taps are fairly common, those taps that are larger than 2" can create their own unique challenges. Fortunately, you have a few different options available when you need to make a large diameter water main tap. Here's a quick overview to help you get started.
When you perform a large diameter water main tap, you have a number of benefits that help make the process easier. First, a wet tap service avoids a shutdown, leaving businesses and homes without water for a number of hours. In some instances, a shutdown could be devastating for hospitals, water treatment plants, and other high-water demand facilities.
Fortunately, you have other alternatives that will save you the expense of equipment, training, labor and time while keeping your water system operational. You can also avoid the extensive liability insurance required when tapping a main for a large diameter pipe. After listening to our customer's concerns about these types of issues, we've developed a large diameter water main tapping service that gives you the benefits of no-shut-down main tapping without all the extra expense.
When Team EJP's large diameter water main tapping service is put to work for your water utility, there are a number of aspects that we take care of. Our trained servicemen use our equipment to install the tapping sleeve. We'll install the tapping valve and machine on your ductile iron, cast iron, PVC or AC pipe while it's under pressure, allowing you to keep your water service active to your customers. Once we finish tapping the main, you'll have a mechanical joint connection that is ready for your pipe connection, along with a guarantee of the work we've performed on your water mains.
So what do we need you to do to get ready to have your large diameter water mains tapped? You'll need to provide us with the size and type of the pipe you need to tap, including the outside diameter of the pipe. You'll need to tell us what size tapping valve that you need to have installed, as well as the direction of the tapping valve's opening. We'll also need to know the line's working pressure and whether you'd prefer a mechanical joint or stainless steel sleeve
You'll also need to excavate the area to meet OSHA excavation standards. The area needed for the work and equipment can vary depending on the size of the main. Any surface water will need to be removed, and you'll need to provide crushed stone to stabilize the bottom of the trench if it's needed, including the weight of the tapping machine, and shoring the trench up as needed to ensure worker safety. In addition, you need to provide a tapping sleeve and valve unless you'd prefer that we provide it at an additional charge.|
