Corrosion can be a serious issue for a waterworks utility.
Corrosive gases and acids form in wastewater systems, creating an environment that can e extremely harsh on assets like pipes. Fortunately, epoxy coating for rehabilitation is an excellent option that creates a protective barrier between your assets and their environment. This epoxy rehab service is available for both potable and non-potable applications. Here's a quick look at the problem in wastewater and how it's solved with epoxy coating.
Anaerobic bacteria are part of any sewer system. They reduce sulfates to create hydrogen sulfide gas or H2S. When this gas is dissolved in water, it's known as hydro sulfuric acid and acts as a weak acid. When it's released into a headspace that contains oxygen above your wastewater in concentrations higher than 2ppm, anaerobic bacteria can then convert the hydrogen sulfide gas into sulfuric acid, which is a much stronger acid that can cause significant corrosion within your system. This process is known as biogenic sulfide corrosion.
Areas that tend to be at high risk for corrosion are wet sells, terminus manholes, splitter boxes, pump stations, outlets, low-velocity flow areas, areas where multiple flows come together, and grit chambers.
Though repairs and rehabilitation can be made with brick, mortar, cement and hydraulic cement, these repairs won't last for any significant amount of time without protection from the corrosion that made them necessary in the first place. The options for avoiding traditional rehab methods include replacing the failed infrastructure with HDPE or PVC materials, epoxy coating new pre-cast assets in areas of high risk, or rehabbing the damaged infrastructure using corrosion-resistant, high-build 100% solids epoxy.
As a licensed applicator of Warren Environmental System's 100% Solids Epoxy Coating, Team EJP is proud to help our customers achieve great results. The combination of the unique product and proprietary application process creates a ceramic-like finish that is easily able to resist corrosion from acidic and alkaline liquids, gasses and solids. We can completely rehab your structure with a minimum - or even no - out-of-service time.
As an environmentally friendly product, this epoxy is safe to apply even in tight spaces and is resistant to groundwater infiltration. As a structural epoxy, it works well to restore steel or concrete tanks. It can be applied to badly deteriorated assets at 250 mils to create a self-supporting structure, and at 125 mills to protect new assets from corrosion and infiltration.
By investing in applying an epoxy coating to your water utility's assets, you're protecting those assets for many years to come, helping you extend their useful lifespan significantly. But what if you're not quite sure whether a rehabilitative epoxy coating is right for your needs? The experienced professionals at Team EJP are ready to help.
